Who are we?

Southampton University Mixed Martial Arts (SUMMA) is a community with a passion for sport, fitness, self-defence and fun! We are accessible to all skill levels, from total beginners to seasoned professionals – we have a wide range of people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. MMA can be as much or as little as you like; you can get involved in 1 or 2, or even all of them!

We teach a variety of disciplines:

Striking with Muay Thai, groundwork with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and everything combined with MMA.

We run a free women's-only self-defence session every week to empower women with techniques that may save their lives and help them feel confident.

A Bit About Us

We're a welcoming club, so please don't feel intimidated and come and give our amazing sport a try. We have regular socials and plenty of opportunities to meet and get to know the people in the club. (including pub crawls, karaoke, themed socials, UFC screenings and more!)

Our committee is here for you, so if you have any questions, please message a member of the committee through Instagram, and we'll do our best to help.

We regularly compete in kickboxing, Muay Thai, BJJ and MMA interclubs across the country at many different universities. We even host our own fight night, where competitors across the country come to compete in an experience- and weight-based match-up. 

What martial arts do you teach?

-Muay Thai-

Muay Thai is a striking martial art using punches, kicks, knees and clinching. It is widely considered the best striking martial art in the world. Thai Boxing sessions are perfect for everyone, from those looking for a new hobby to those looking to compete in striking tournaments.

-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling martial art, focused on leverage and technique, allowing smaller practitioners to overcome bigger and stronger opponents. A wide variety of grappling techniques are taught, from guard passes to submissions to takedowns. BJJ has it all!

-MMA-

We put it all together in our weekly sessions where we learn important takedowns, submissions, pins and striking techniques MMA fighters use. Our sessions are coached by Bryony Tyrell, a professional women's MMA fighter, and feature some killer techniques to really flesh out your skillset. 

-Self-defence-

We have 2 women's-only classes using the techniques of both Muay Thai and BJJ for girls interested in learning about self-defence or looking to get into grappling in a female-only environment. 

Who runs the sessions?

Our sessions are run by a mix of student coaches and external fighters out of some of the best gyms in the city. 

MMA is taught by professional MMA fighter Bryony Tyrell of Hoplite Jiu-Jitsu.

Muay Thai with seasoned coach Daniel Victor Bourne of Exile MMA.

BJJ with skilled brown belt Dylan Young of Parity MMA.
