Quidditch
Quadball (previously known as Quidditch) is a mixed gender, full contact sport that can be loosely described as a combination of handball, rugby and dodgeball. Quadball is a sport that, in most cases, starts at the university level – everyone joining the club is a beginner! We play other teams in the University League. SQC won the British Quadball Cup in 2022, placed third in 2023, and second in 2024. 2 years ago, we had the incredible opportunity to play in the European Quadball Cup held in Italy. Over the academic year, there are various competitive, fun and friendly competitions. We are an inclusive sport that does not support J.K. Rowling. As per the International Quadball Association rulebook: “Athletes play as their stated gender. All quadball athletes have the right to define how they identify and it is this stated gender that is recognised on pitch”.

Gameplay:
Ever wanted to play a game of rugby and dodgeball at the same time, on the same pitch? Congratulations, your dream has come true! Quadball is the world's first mixed-gender full-contact sport. There are three main parts of gameplay:
- Chasing: four chasers on each team use the volleyball (previously quaffle) to score goals through the opposition's hoops. Each goal is worth ten points, and the other team's chasers work together to defend their hoops with strategy and tackling.
- Beating: two beaters on each team fight for control of three dodgeballs (previously bludgers) that they can use to 'beat' the other team's players. 'Beat' players must drop the ball they are holding, come off-stick and to tap back in at their hoops.
- Seeking: after 20 minutes, a flag runner (previously snitch) is sent onto the pitch. This is a person who does not play for either team who wears yellow shorts with a, for lack of better words, tennis ball in a sock (the flag) velcroed to the back. One seeker from each team is sent onto the pitch to attempt to catch the flag by removing it from the flag runner. Catching the flag is worth thirty points, and in most situations, ends the game.
Players use a stick (previously brooms - a length of PVC piping) between their legs to show whether they are currently in play, and as a handicap - just like rugby players only throwing backwards, or netball players being unable to move with the ball.
Inclusivity and Community:
We are a sport that is well and truly beginner friendly - trust us, the excuse 'but I can't even throw or catch a ball!' doesn't fly here, because neither could we! It's a fast-paced game that relies on rolling subs, so whether you can run for miles or only for a few seconds, you'll have people to swap out with. If you're still not convinced, don't worry! Unlike many other sports societies, we will never pressure you come to a tournament, and if weekly fun and silly exercise is what you want, that's all you have to do. We also pride ourselves on being a safe space for LGBTQ+ representation in sports. Being mixed-gender and proudly gender-diverse, there is no level of the game that your identity or expression will bar you from playing, and our diverse, inclusive and welcoming community is one of our best qualities.
